In a piece of news that could surely only happen in this state, a New Mexico town will soon be getting a historic marker for a UFO incident. And believe it or not, this town is not Roswell.

In April of 1964 police officer Lonnie Zamora had a close encounter with a large egg-shaped craft that had landed in the desert just outside of Socorro. Included in the sighting were what appeared to be two small humans wearing white jump suits. As Zamora made his way closer to the strange sight for a closer look the humanoids disappeared back inside their ship and abruptly lifted off into the sky as blue-flame shot out the bottom forcing officer Zamora to duck behind his patrol car for cover.
The event in Socorro has since become one of New Mexico’s most celebrated UFO cases, notably because investigators were actually able to find physical evidence of the craft’s lift-off.
Now 44 years later the town of Socorro has plans to erect a historical marker at the site of Zamora’s UFO sighting. This was announced at a MUFON meeting at the Socorro Public Library according to Dr. Don Burleson, Roswell resident and state director of MUFON in New Mexico, in his column “Looking Up” which appears in the Roswell Daily Record’s monthly magazine Vision. Burleson said at the meeting the “mayor pro-tem of Socorro” Donald Monette asked for a few minutes of the meeting’s time and then made the surprise announcement.
This seems to be the first time a historical marker has been set up at the site of a UFO sighting as far as Dr. Burleson knows. The marker is expected to be erected in August later this year.

Could someone post a map to the site? She would love to go see it.
