30 Seconds of Freedom

Clovis’s Main Street was the site of an extraordinary sight Tuesday afternoon, when female inmate Angelica Madrid made her escape from Curry County Detention Center.
According to the Clovis News Journal, Madrid was arrested based on outstanding warrants from Arizona, and was being held without bail, which upset her. So, Madrid carefully planned her escape using all the ingenuity of a Saturday morning cartoon. She hid behind a cart filled with food trays and tiptoed out.
Warden Leslie Johnson explained, “She just slipped out. She was ‘duck walking’ behind the food cart.”
When the food cart officer opened the door leading outside it was then that Madrid ran for it across a parking lot and towards Main Street. The stunned guards quickly chased after their fugitive.
Then came Angelica Madrid’s minute of glory, or rather, her 30 seconds of glory. She must have felt the wind in her hair, the gravel under feet, and the heady rush of adrenaline that comes with running for your life. She must have breathed in the free air with gasping breaths while running from officers and dodging traffic on Main Street.
She must not have seen the truck coming…or if she saw the truck, she must not have seen its large rear-view mirror. It was that very mirror that halted her freedom dash. It winged her and sent her sprawling, which allowed officers to catch up and take her back into custody.

“She’s in lockdown (now) and she is going to have new charges filed on her…we will make sure we keep a very close eye on her,” said Johnson.
Perhaps next time they should keep a closer eye on the other side of the food cart.
