After the three-day bacchanalia that was Fourth of July Weekend, do you have nothing more to show for your love of our nation’s inception than the lingering savor of burnt hot dogs and cheap beer? What if you could wake up bright and early Monday morning and replace those lurid aftertastes with something a little brighter, a little sweeter, a little more international?

If you’re lucky (!) enough to live in Albuquerque, the festivities don’t have to stop. On Monday, everyone’s favorite fount of maple-flavored corn syrup and whipped-cream-topped waffles, the International House of Pancakes, is celebrating its 50th birthday with a “special breakfast” from 7:30 to 9:30 am at its 8100 Wyoming NE location.

Plenty of distinguished community leaders may or may not be onhand, according to The New Mexico Business Weekly. You can certainly expect to see Ed Hafez, IHOP’s director of operations in Albuquerque, but “city representatives” have also been invited to attend. And, no doubt to lend an air of government sanction to the gala, Mayor Martin Chavez’s presence has not only been requested, but he has even been graciously invited to proclaim Monday, July 7th “IHOP Day”.

The City of Albuquerque website is so far keeping it all very hush-hush.

Now, with all these dignitaries attending and/or invited to attend, you may be thinking, Would I be welcome at so august an event? Never fear.

The public is invited to take part in the 50th anniversary breakfast. Those celebrating their birthday on July 7 will be offered a complimentary breakfast at the event (after sending an e-mail request to abqihop50@yahoo.com), while those celebrating their 50th birthday will have the chance to win free pancakes for a year.

But hey, this isn’t the only time the 8100 Wyoming location of IHOP has been involved in a free giveaway--of sorts. In April 2008, various news sources reported that two IHOP employees, including one from the restaurant on Wyoming, tested positive for the acute infectious disease hepatitis A. (Wikipedia explains that the infection is spread through the “fecal-oral route,” which is possibly an even better place to get your kicks than Route 66.)

So if your July 4th celebrations were marred by fatigue, fever, jaundice, clay-colored stool, dark urine, vomiting, or abdominal pain, and you ate at IHOP on Wyoming or IHOP on Mercantile Ave. from roughly the end of March to the end of April, you might wanna think about getting that checked out. If not, it’s probably just those nasty hot dogs you ate, and you should feel free to celebrate the glorious beginning of our nation’s (and Canada's! and Mexico's!) IHOPs these hallowed 50 years past.

I totally wish I had called this piece "Rootie Tootie Fresh and Infectious." And yes, that is another Lisa. We're going to all band together and take over the planet, one day...
